A study published in the journal JAMA Oncology revealed that adult cancer survivors, especially those diagnosed within five years and/or who have a history of chemotherapy, are at an increased risk of developing bone fractures compared to older adults without cancer (ACS).

For the study, the researchers from the American Cancer Society analyzed the information from the 1997–2017 Medicare claims-linked Cancer Prevention Study II. In addition, they looked at variations in fracture risk according to treatment, cancer type, and modifiable behavior.

Based on the data analysis, they found that 12,943 of the 92,431 study participants had bone fractures attributable to their fragility. The researchers observed that the vertebral and pelvic fracture sites were mostly responsible for the greater fracture risk in cancer survivors. Additionally, it was seen that chemotherapy recipients had a higher risk of fracture compared to cancer survivors who did not get chemotherapy. They also found that physically active survivors had a lower probability of breaking a bone, while survivors who smoked had a higher risk.
